An illustration costs attention, and weight on the page: it has to give something back. In
Maggioli’s products it explains, welcomes or marks a moment; it does not decorate the screens
where people work.Magma has no library of interface illustrations yet: the artworks of the group, its logos
and the marks of its products, are in Brand assets. Until there is one,
these decisions guide whoever draws or chooses an illustration for a product.
When to use one
To explain what words alone make hard: how a procedure goes, how a service works. To fill a space that would otherwise be empty, and say what to do next.To welcome: the first access, a guided tour, a new feature. Not on the screens where people work, such as lists, forms and tables: there, the space
belongs to the data. And not to soften an error: a serious problem needs a clear message,
not a drawing.
A case without files shows, in mds-zero, an illustration, the message “No files in this
case yet” and one action: “Upload a file”.An illustration sits above a table of invoices, pushing the data below the fold.
Where they go
Empty states, with mds-zero: the illustration, a short message and one action.Guided tours and announcements: one illustration per step or per news item, all from
the same family.Editorial pages: the pages that present a product or a publication, where the brand
steps forward.
How they are drawn
One idea each. If an illustration needs a caption to be understood, it says too much. One family per product. The same line, palette and perspective in every illustration
of a product: a mix of styles makes a product look patched together.Few colors, from Magma’s palettes, less saturated than the actions, so that an
illustration never competes with a button. No text inside. Text in an image cannot be translated, read by a screen reader or
enlarged: it goes in the page, next to the image.Light. SVG whenever possible, and nothing a product cannot do without when the user asks
for lower consumption. Both modes. No white background baked in: an illustration is checked in dark mode too.People as they are. When an illustration shows people, it shows the variety of those
who use the products: ages, genders, origins, disabilities.
Accessibility
Most illustrations are decorative: their alternative text is empty, and the message is in
the text next to them.An illustration that carries information says it in its alternative text.An animated illustration stops when the user asks for less motion, and never loops without
a way to stop it.
