Magma Design System
Typography
Magma sets text in four families, each with a job, and a short scale of styles within them. This page says why, and which style to use when; the sizes, the classes and the tokens of every style are in Tokens: Typography.
Four families, four jobs
Title, Roboto: headings and actions. A sans serif that stays plain and institutional at large sizes and heavy weights.Info, Karla: the text of the interface, the one people work with: forms, tables, menus, messages. It is legible at small sizes, and its lowercase g recalls the one of the Maggioli logo.Read, Merriweather: long reading, such as articles, commentaries and the texts of the law. A serif drawn for screens, with sturdy shapes that hold up at length.Code, Roboto Mono: strings where every character counts, such as tax codes, IBANs, protocol numbers, and code.
Information and knowledge
Maggioli writes software and publishes books, journals and legal databases. Info and Read keep the two apart: the interface where people do their work speaks in Karla, the content they read and study speaks in Merriweather. At a glance, users know whether they are working or reading.
Picking a style
h1: the title of the page, once per page.h2 and h3: the sections of a page, and the titles of articles in a list.h4 to h6: subsections, the titles of cards and panels, previews in dense lists.action: the text of buttons and other actions.paragraph: text that takes time to read, such as descriptions, guides and, with read, articles.detail: the body text of the interface, such as messages, descriptions and table cells.caption: secondary information, such as dates, authors, notes and footers.label and tip: short and small text, such as field labels, badges and tooltips.option: the smallest text, in bold, for overlines and tiny labels of one or two words.snippet and hack: codes and code, snippet on a line of its own, hack inside a sentence. Three rules hold for all of them: The tag says the structure, the style says the look. A section of the page is an h2 even when it sits in a card and looks like an h5: mds-text takes the two apart, with tag and typography. Never skip a heading level to get a smaller size.Bold sparingly. A paragraph full of bold has no emphasis left.Text follows the reader. The sizes are in rem, so they grow with the text size the user sets; reading text keeps a line short enough to follow, about 60 to 80 characters.
Fonts
All four fonts have open licenses, and the products serve them themselves, from their own files: never from Google’s servers. A font loaded from a third party’s server hands the address of every user to that party, which a product of the public administration cannot do. Download the fonts from Google Fonts to work in design tools; in a product, install the Fontsource packages and load the weights of the scale, as the installation guide shows.

A font outside these four needs a license the company holds, for every use it is put to.
