Using icons
Icons help people find and recognize things: an action, a section, a state. They are a language, and like a language they work only if every sign keeps its meaning. This page says how to use them; the packages hold them all, and Using iconsauce explains how they get into a product.
Which set
Look in the sets in this order, and take the first icon that fits:
  1. Material Icons (mi), Google’s set: the base of the interface, for actions, navigation and states. Most users already know its icons from other products.
  2. Maggioli (mgg): the concepts of Maggioli’s field that Material does not have, such as ANPR, pagoPA, building land or citizenship.
  3. Material Design Icons (mdi), a community set: what neither of the others has, such as the logos of other services.
When to use one
Icons belong in the navigation, in the titles of sections, in the buttons of the main actions, in banners and messages that report a state, and next to a word when they make it clearer. Not on every item of a list or every button of a page: when everything has an icon, none of them stands out.
How to choose one
Simple. Fewer details read better, especially at small sizes.Literal before metaphorical. A document for documents, a calendar for dates. When a concept has no image of its own, take the object closest to it.Serious. An icon informs; it is not there to amuse. One concept, one icon. All settings use the same gear, whatever they set, and an icon never means two different things in the same product.Conventions stay as they are. Search, settings, delete, close, download: people know these icons, and a new drawing would only make them think twice.Understood everywhere. Maggioli’s products also speak Spanish and Greek: avoid icons built on local objects or gestures.
The settings of the account, of the printing and of the notifications all use the gear icon. Each kind of settings gets an icon of its own: a person, a printer, a bell with a gear.
With a label
An icon goes with a word. Only the actions everyone knows, such as close, search and the menu, can stand alone: then the button still has a label for screen readers, and a tooltip that shows it. mds-icon is decorative by default, so the meaning always comes from the text or from the label of the control around it.
A button with the download icon and the label “Download the receipt”.A toolbar of five buttons with only an icon each, some of them drawn for this product.
Size
Icons are 24px, the size mds-icon takes by default; the components size the icons they hold to their text. A larger image is no longer an icon, it is an illustration.
A new icon
Before drawing one, search the three sets, also by their tags: the icon may be there under another name. If none fits, propose it for the Maggioli set with a contribution proposal: the concept, where it is used, and why the existing icons do not fit. A new Maggioli icon is drawn on the same 24px grid as Material Icons, with the same strokes and corners, so that it can sit next to them.
